Pre-register for travel

Travel

All infection prevention rules for COVID-19 have been lifted at the Icelandic border, regardless of tourists’ vaccination status. However, it varies what rules apply at the borders of other countries.

Overseas travel

Guidelines for Icelanders travelling abroad have been published. These provide for the use of protective masks, infection prevention measures that everyone must employ, not least overseas, and what must be done when returning back home.

It is extremely important to avoid travel if you have any symptoms of infection. Before travelling, it is important to find out what rules apply in the country to which you are travelling, by familiarising yourself with the travel advice of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.

The relevant information on the rights of travellers with regards to COVID-19 may be found on the website of Ferðamálastofa.

Testing of asymptomatic individuals for travel abroad

Rapid antigen test

COVID-19 rapid antigen tests are available at:

Öryggismiðstöðin

PCR tests

If you are going to travel abroad and need a negative PCR test, you must schedule a test with enough notice in order to get the certificate in time for the trip.

Within the Greater Reykjavík Area: You register and pay electronically, and the certificates are sent electronically by e-mail. If you need a certificate on paper with an original stamp, please contact the healthcare centre and pay separately for the certificate there.

Outside the Greater Reykjavík Area: Please note that each district decides whether departure testing is offered at healthcare centres. If departure testing is needed, you must contact the healthcare centre that handles departure testing for travellers.

Asymptomatic individuals who come for departure testing pay according to the price list and regulations.

Vaccination certificates

Those who have completed vaccination against COVID-19 can obtain a vaccination certificate on the website heilsuvera.is one week after the full vaccination has been completed. The validity period of the certificates is 9 months after full vaccination, but after the booster dose, the validity period expires. However, it varies what rules apply at the borders of other countries.

The vaccination certificate states that it is not a travel identity document (i.e. not a passport), but the certificates are valid as confirmation of vaccination during surveillance inspection due to infection prevention measures, whether at the border or elsewhere.

Emergencies

In an emergency, the civil service emergency number is open 24 hours a day.
