Iceland's borders have remained open to other EU and Schengen states throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, under the condition that passengers quarantine for 14 days upon arrival. Iceland will continue to implement the travel restrictions imposed for the Schengen Area, which are currently in place.
Passengers can opt for a COVID-19 test upon arrival, as an alternative to quarantine.
As of 31 July, all passengers arriving in Iceland (except children born 2005 and later) from high-risk areas who intend to stay in Iceland for 10 days or more have to undergo two PCR-tests. The 1st is at the border on arrival and the 2nd by the primary health care service 4-6 days later. In between the two tests special precautions need to be taken. The 2nd test is free of charge and testing is available at health care services all over the country (see locations below under the title The second test).
People with Icelandic citizenship, residency in Iceland and / or have a robust contact network are obliged to undergo two PCR-tests regardless of the length of stay in Iceland.
Children born in 2005 or later are exempt from both testing and quarantine as well as passengers arriving outside defined areas with high risk of infection (Greenland, Faroe Islands, Denmark, Norway, Finland, and Germany) given that they have stayed there 14 days or longer. Icelanders returning home from these countries will also be exempt from mandatory precautionary measures but they are encouraged to be cautious for fourteen days after returning home, maintain individual hygiene measures and avoid contact with vulnerable individuals during that time.
A few important things for you to have in mind while traveling in Iceland:
If you are traveling from abroad and have cold-like symptoms should contact the Health line +354 544 4113. The helpline is always the first point of contact and people must call before going to hospitals or clinics.
Please observe and follow notifications that are visible in hotels, guesthouses, car rentals and other tourism companies throughout the country.
Passengers are required to fill out a pre-registration form (on www.covid.is/english) before departure to Iceland, which requires passengers to provide their personal details and contact information, flight information, travel dates , address(es) during their stay in Iceland and information on countries they have visited before arrival.
Passengers are also encouraged to download and use the COVID-19 app Rakning C-19. The app contains important information on COVID-19 and how to contact the health care service in Iceland.
Guidelines for health safety measures are being updated in line with EASA and ECDC COVID-19 Health Safety Protocol, Operational Guidelines for the management of air passengers and aviation personnel in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic. Passengers will be required to abide by these guidelines. The guidelines for ports and ships are also in line with EASA and ECDC COVID-19 Health Safety Protocol.
The pre-registration form provides passengers with information on the conditions for entry into Iceland. Passengers can choose to be tested by a PCR-test for COVID-19 on arrival (and in some cases 4-6 days later) or self-quarantine for two weeks. Children born in 2005 or later are exempt from these measures, as well as those who have stayed outside of high-risk areas for 14 days prior to arrival. Flight and freight ship crews who are residents in Iceland are also exempt from these measures. At this time, the Icelandic health authorities cannot accept proof of test results. Those with a previously confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19 in Iceland are exempt from quarantine upon their return from travel abroad.
Testing will be available at Keflavik airport and in Seydisfjordur (for passengers arriving on the Smyril Line) for those who opt to be tested on arrival in Iceland. Passengers arriving in other international airports (Reykjavik, Akureyri, Egilsstadir) or ports will be tested at the closest local healthcare centre. The pre-registration process will facilitate testing and shorten wait times for passengers.
Passengers are charged ISK 9 000 for a single test at pre-registration but ISK 11 000 if paid on arrival although no more than ISK 22 000 every 30 days for each individual.
Following the PCR-test at the border, passengers are required to abide special precautions while waiting for the second PCR-test result.
During the first five days after arrival in Iceland while waiting for results, everyone should:
• not attend gatherings of more than ten people,
• avoid close contact with individuals that are at risk of severe illness or otherwise vulnerable to the disease,
• maintain a distance of two meters when interacting with others,
• avoid handshakes and hugs,
• practice good personal hygiene such as thorough hand-washing.
However, during this period, people can:
• use public transport to reach their destination,
• go for a drive,
• go grocery shopping,
• meet friends and family with the above-mentioned limitations
Icelandic citizens and residents in Iceland, who choose to be tested upon arrival in Iceland must undergo a second PCR-test, free of charge, four to five days after arrival. Those who test negative are no longer required to take special precautions. Those who test positive must self-isolate.
Although this regulatory change only applies to Icelandic citizens and residents of Iceland, their families and others who have a large network of friends and family in Iceland are encouraged to take the same precautions.
The 2nd test is free of charge and testing is available at health care services all over the country.
In the Reykjavík area testing is performed at Suðurlandsbraut 34, 108 Reykjavík, ground floor, between 10:00 and 15:00 Monday to Friday, and between 12:00 til 15:00 on weekends and holidays. No appointments are made.
Outside the Reykjavik area an appointment needs to be made with the primary health care service between 8Am and 4PM. Following primary health care services outside the Reykjavík area provide PCR-tests:

If a passenger tests positive, they may be offered to undergo further tests to determine whether or not they have an active infection. In the case of an active infection, the passenger must self-isolate. Foreign nationals who are required to self-isolate and do not have access to a suitable location where they can isolate will be given accommodation at a specialised isolation centre at no cost to them. Infected individuals must provide information to the contact tracing team on who they have come in close contact with during two days prior to the onset of their symptoms.
You need to undergo quarantine when there is a possibility that you have been exposed to COVID-19 infection although you do not experience any symptoms. All information on requirements for quarantine is available here. Please note that violations of quarantine or isolation requirements are subject to fines or enforcement action from the relevant authorities to ensure compliance.
A negative test result does not guarantee that an individual will not later be required to self-quarantine if they have been exposed to infection, e.g. on the flight to Iceland. The contact tracing team interviews those who have been in close contact with a confirmed active case during two days prior to the onset of symptoms , e.g. been within 2 meters of an individual for more than 15 minutes, or those who have sat beside an infected individual on an airplane. They might be required to self-quarantine for two weeks from the time of last contact.
The following applies if the individual was wearing a face mask (medical mask) and adhered to guidelines regarding hygiene and infection control as recommended. If those conditions are not met then the situation is evaluated and who needs to be quarantine possibly expanded.
Contact tracing is done for passengers within the 2 rows around a SARS-CoV-2 positively tested case. Contact tracing is performed in general from 24 hours before his/her symptoms started (from 24 hours before diagnostic testing if asymptomatic). All these passengers should be informed about the exposure. Only passengers sitting directly next to the index patient will be defined as close contacts (high risk exposure). If the index patient sat on the aisle, the person sitting on the other side of the aisle will not be categorized as close contact (unless there is another indication, such as a travel partner/family, direct touch, coughed or sneezed on).
As a result, in most events, there will be 1−2 close contacts, all other persons would be contact persons with a lower risk of infection (low risk of exposure).
Please note that violations of quarantine or isolation requirements are subject to fines or enforcement action from the relevant authorities to ensure compliance.
Medical examination, treatment or medical supervision of notifiable diseases, including COVID-19, is of no cost to the patient. This does not apply to an elective PCR-test for the diagnosis of COVID-19.
All travellers are encouraged to take precautionary measures to protect themselves and others, such as frequent handwashing, use of disinfectants, the two-meter social distancing guidelines, and to respect health safety regulations in place. PCR tests do not absolutely rule out COVID-19 infections in asymptomatic individuals.
Travellers are encouraged to download and use the COVID-19 app Rakning C-19. The app contains important information on COVID-19 and how to contact the health care service. They are also encouraged to follow information on the official COVID-19 information portal www.covid.is/english, which hosts the most up to date information and important announcements in several languages for tourists.
Tourists are encouraged to monitor their health. Those who become ill or think they may have symptoms of COVID-19 can contact the health care helpline through the app Rakning C-19, the information portal www.covid.is, through the national online health portal Heilsuvera, by phone by dialling 1700 or, if calling from a foreign phone number, at +354 544 4113.
All travellers are encouraged to maintain a distance of 2 meters as much as possible. Social distancing is an important part of preventive measures and anyone who wishes is entitled to maintain distance.
